Can you Run against TIME? September 30, 2010

All of us will age, some age beautifully like a wine, but some also take ageing not so seriously. It’s a fact that all of us will get old, and as we grow older our body ages too. When we look in the mirror, we no longer see the same soft skin that we used to have, wrinkles will appear, and the strength that we once have will slowly deteriorate. But do we have to just sit back and watch as we aged?

Life is a learning experience, and once again I have learned something last Sunday from the Immuvit’s Run Against Time race held at Greenhills. It was spearheaded by Pascual Laboratories with one of the country’s well-known coach, Coach Jim Saret. It was a 3K and 5K race, and many of the member of Team Endure were present, and since it’s a free  race, lots of participants were also present.
After running the 5K race, free Subway sandwich and coffee (yummy!) was served. And coach Jim Saret talked about Somatopause.
What is SOMATOPAUSE?
  • It is a gradual and progressive decrease in growth hormone secretion that occurs normally with increasing age during adult life and is associated with an increase in adipose tissue and LDL levels and a decrease in lean body mass. (Webster Dictionary)
  • The weight-gain, metabolism slowdown phase that typically begins in the mid-30′s. The SOMATOPAUSE (sa-mot-a-pause) is the name medical researchers give to the metabolism slowdown that typically begins in the mid-30s. This condition has been called the middle-age spread, and the middle-age bulge. Whatever it’s called, the middle-age somatopause impacts 80 million baby-boomers in the U.S. and millions more world wide.  (Phil Campbell)

I did a little research and found the following facts:

Clinical Signs of the Somatopause
  • Weight gain
  • Energy Loss
  • Skin wrinkling
  • Decreasing muscle
  • Loss of bone density
  • Increasing body fats (especially around the waist)

What causes the Somatopause?

The somatopause is directly related to the decline of growth hormone produced by the body during aging. However, a specific form of exercise has been shown by researchers to increase growth hormone by 530%! The following chart illustrates the problem.

Technically, if we reach a certain age in our life, somatopause occurs, and what shall we do when this happen. We do exercise, eat healthy, take enough rest, and if we can avoid in our everyday stress why not. We can also do this by taking vitamins, that’s why Immuvit sponsored a run to increase awareness in people. And also by doing exercise, a metafit exercise is a good example, Coach Jim Saret gave us a taste of this exercise, by just doing the 4 minute routine he asked us to do, by body felt like I did a half marathon after, and my body was still sore for the following 2 days after. So that’s why I did again a little research about Meta Fit Exercise.

The program is called META-FIT and is designed by one of the country’s most-sought after coaches, Jim Saret.

“META-FIT is a workout program that takes less than 5 minutes to do. It has been scientifically proven to trigger the release of somatotropin, a growth hormone whose decline is directly related to the physical and physiological
changes brought upon by somatopause,” says Coach Jim, who also currently handles the country’s top three sports teams: the RP Smart Gilas Basketball Team, the RP Swimming Team, and the RP Boxing Team.

So whether or not you are an Immuvit user, take care of your body, take enough rest and exercise daily. It’s not just for yourself but for your loved-one as well. And if you are free, why not join races, and wait for announcement from Immuvit for they said that the race would be on a monthly basis, to increase awareness about health and spread information on how to take care of the body. :)
